Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Impact

  • Develop a visionary and future-oriented strategy for the ESA region that aligns with CARE’s global mission.
  • Lead the creation and implementation of regional and country strategies that are adaptable and grounded in local contexts.
  • Innovate CARE’s operational models to enhance impact, relevance, and local leadership.

Humanitarian Leadership

  • Ensure CARE is prepared to respond effectively to both protracted and sudden-onset humanitarian crises.
  • Advocate for CARE’s principled humanitarian actions and influence regional and global responses strategically.
  • Enhance coordination, access, and effectiveness of responses in challenging environments.

Operational Excellence

  • Oversee the programmatic, financial, and risk management performance across the region.
  • Support Country Directors and senior leadership in ensuring high-quality program design, delivery, compliance, and impact.
  • Foster organizational resilience amidst operational complexities and political changes.

Partnerships & Advocacy

  • Represent CARE in high-level external engagements with donors, governments, regional bodies, and private sector stakeholders.
  • Lead a proactive regional advocacy agenda addressing issues impacting women and vulnerable communities.
  • Develop a forward-thinking regional resource mobilization strategy, including private sector partnerships and funding opportunities.

People & Culture

  • Directly manage, mentor, and empower Country Directors and regional leadership teams.
  • Build inclusive, high-performing teams that reflect CARE’s dedication to equity and justice.
  • Lead strategic talent development and succession planning initiatives across the region.

  • A strategic and empathetic leader with extensive experience in international development and humanitarian response.
  • Proficient in navigating complex political, economic, and humanitarian landscapes in Africa.
  • Experienced in high-level representation, advocacy, and resource mobilization.
  • A proponent of locally led solutions, gender equality, and transformative partnerships.
  • Recognized for decisiveness, emotional intelligence, and cross-cultural adaptability.
  • Willing to travel extensively within the region and engage with diverse stakeholders at all levels.
